Week 5
Hi guys!
Well last week I informed you about what Diigo and Google
alert are. I then went on to add these tools to my PLE, as I have been doing
normally. What I did not do, however, is inform you that these tools also help to
grow your PLN. Remember PLN from my first post? Personal Learning Network. PLN
allow you to build “your own classrooms and own curriculum” according to WillRichardson’s youtube video
; which is what these tools allow you to do. You are grabbing information from
other sites, thus creating a network,
and personalizing the information
according to what you like and want to learn.
This week we will be looking at another tool to add to
your PLN and I am sure many of you are familiar with it.
Twitter!
I will be honest with you, I have never created or used
twitter ever until a couple days ago. I am not master at it but I can tell you
this, it is actually not bad! Like many tools we have explored throughout my
blogs such feedly, google alert, and diigo, twitter is another convenient tool
to help you grab information you need or want, all whilst creating networks
with other people from across the world. You can follow someone you like or
something you like and if they would like they could follow you back (which
would be considered netiquette- remember this term?). By following this person you have access to anything they tweet. For
example I am following BrockU and they have recently started to follow
me! By following them I have created a network and I will be alerted of any new
tweet they post; some informational and some social. This way I can keep up to
date with information. Sound familiar? (Yes! Just like the other tools!). Twitter
also allows you to create lists or groups based off of whatever topic you find
interesting and want to share with certain people you follow!
Twitter and my PLE
Here we go again with the PLE… I know! But honestly having a PLE makes
you realise how many places you can visit to get information, how many things
you can use to note information and so on. Without it, you might feel
overwhelmed or confused as to where you can find/create information. So let’s
get to it. I would put twitter under synthesizing and creating> producing
content because I can briefly put helpful information like blogs do or just
link a message to a blog… I could also put it under collaborating and
socializing> communication because I am communicating with feel twitter
users… I could also put it under digital literacy and create a whole new
subtheme called “sharing content” > twitter because I can post, retweet
(share) contents so other people can see it!
Well that is it for this week. For those of you who have
not yet started to use twitter, I STRONGLY encourage you to start! By far it is
the easiest and most fun tool I have used to build by PLE and PLN.
Cheers.
Michelle, your blogging continue to impress! Very glad you have found value in Twitter, I was originally a hesitant to use the tool, and now it's become a critical component of my PLE. If you're not already, I highly recommend the mobile app for on-the-go networking and PD. Great work here! :)

Hi Michelle, great post! I always enjoy reading your posts because of your engaging writing style, it feels like you are one of my friends telling a story. I particularly enjoyed your post this week because I can relate very well to it. I am also a Twitter virgin and having played around with it over the last few days I am starting to see why so many people use it. Aside from the social aspect of it (which I am not too keen on) there is a whole world of information available on Twitter if you know where to look for it. Like you said, Twitter is another great tool to find information on what interests you and being able to share content with others is a great way to build a valuable network. Have you started following anyone particularly interesting yet?
ReplyDeleteNo one of particular interest other than BrockU which I like because they keep me posted on interesting topics going on in the university. If you find anyone you like please share!
DeleteI am happy you enjoy reading my blogs and hope I continue to entertain you.
Hi Michelle, good post! Glad to know that you have found a certain level of value within the utilization of Twitter, a tool I have used for several years and has become a major part of my own PLE. If you're really interested in Twitter I suggest downloading the TweetDeck tool as it allows for any individual to view multiple parts of their profile at the same time (i.e., Personal profile, news feed, personal messages, etc.).
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Cole Pettem
Hey Michelle,
ReplyDeleteYour blogging ability impresses me! You must be active on Tumblr as well, haha.
I absolutely love your wording when you said that "aside from the very, very personal aspect that twitter brings, consider the more informative and professional face it takes." I myself have been using Twitter for years, and before this week's lesson I was unaware of how lightly I was using it. I would follow pages with funny videos and celebrity gossip, and I never though to dive deep into the Twitter world and find all of the informative pages! I am happy I did!
I agree! I always thought it was a space to share what you were doing or what you liked but it is far more than that!
DeleteHi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI am glad you enjoy and are starting to get the hang of twitter! I have used it personally for many years but this is the first time I as well am using it for educational purposes. If you haven't already try downloading the app on your phone so you can stay up to date where ever you go! I love your style of writing and enjoy reading your blog!
