Week 1: Michelle's weekly report and reflect

Core Rules to Netiquette
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html
Ever heard of Netiquette?
During the first week of this course I was reminded that not only should we keep etiquette, be polite and maintain manners, while having a conversation with someone face-to-face, but also keep etiquette while conversing with someone on the internet; hence the word 'net'iquette.  Of course I have always been aware of these list of etiquette behavior we should engage in (ie. "do onto others as you would do onto yourself") but it was refreshing to be reminded that it is and always will be important to maintain proper manners online. With netiquette people can feel more comfortable expressing their opinions on topics and be sure not to abuse their power obtained from the internet. It is such a helpful tool to help everyone feel welcomed on the internet!

Ever heard of having a digital footprint?
A digital footprint is another concept that you should be aware of. Whether you want one or not, you probably have a digital footprint! This is information about you that has been gathered from your birth up until now. Information if gathered as soon as your born: birth weight, gender, last name etc. Then as you grow older your parents might take pictures of you, posting them on the internet thus furthering your digital footprint. Then you visit your family doctor, where more information is gathered on you. So on and so forth until the day you die, but even then it never ends. Obituaries about your death could be recorded in newspapers!

Digital Footprint
Now it might sounds scary that information is being gathered throughout your life, but think about it. Digital footprinting can be positive! It can be considered as a keepsake. You are able to look back on photos of yourself when you were younger. You could even search for pictures and information of your mother, your grandmother because footprints have been used. Crazy right? I know I love that I have a digital footprint and I will continue to post pictures on my Facebook account and continue to even visit my doctor to enlarge and enrich my footprint.

What is the relationship between Netiquette and Digital Footprinting?
You should always be polite on the internet! It allows people to still have privacy while being on the internet and not have to worry about what other people will think about what is being posted.

Try the Digital Driver's License Exam
This exam reviews your knowledge on digital etiquette. I got 18/20! It's an easy test that can help you realize what areas of digital citizenship will become your focus in your learning. For instance I find myself becoming focused on digital etiquette and digital communication because both seem to be related to one another and are simple to understand yet are very important in the internet world. Just copy this link below to begin the exam!

My classroom readings
During the first week of my adult education class I have had several readings and videos to complete. Ranging from "Netiquette" by Albion.com and Seth T.Ross (2001) to "7 things you should know about blogs" by Educause Learning Initiative (2005) to even a video of "Digital Dossier" by Youth and Media. Throughout the readings and videos I realized that they had certain things in common... For Instance the "7 things you should know about blogs" could be related to the "Digital Dossier" video. In the reading I was informed that "blogs engage people in knowledge, reflection and attract a large number of readership". This is precisely what digital dossiers do. A post on your Facebook wall for instance could inform people on the latest disasters in near by countries, could inform people of tips to be more physically healthy and so on. The other day, because someone posted something on their Facebook, I was informed that the Canadian government has added new laws and policies! Digital dossiers also attract a large number of readerships. I have around 500-600 friends on my Facebook account and I know at least half of them use Facebook. So when I want to post something I know that some of my fiends will look at my post. If they like my post they can share it onto their Facebook, which could have hundreds of friends. Then their friends could see the post and and re-post it. So on and so forth.

So see? Your digital dossier could act as a blog in a sense. You could already be a blogger! Alright maybe I am getting a head of myself but it's a start to a potential blog.

Final thoughts
Don't be scared of having a digital dossier! They are fun to have, informative and you could learn more stuff about yourself and other people than you already know. Also a reminder, remember those 10 basic rules to netiquette in the picture at the beginning and that there is always a person at the other end of the internet. Try to be nice, respectful and just have fun!

Cheers!

  1. Hi Michelle! Great start! :D

You are definitely covering the expected material, and I really like your use of subheadings to organize the content of your post. Although it looks like you have one more bullet to address, I can see you're working towards completion. Great use of white space and photos to enhance visual appeal. ;)

To ensure consistent text formatting, consider composing yoru post in a word processor such as word, then pasting it into the Blogger post editing window. One key is to use the "clear formatting" option to get red of any backdoor code that's responsible for the different font style/formatting.

Also, try to make sure your pictures are properly rotated. For example, your first post has a nice pic of you, but it could use a 90 degree counter-clockwise rotation to get upright. :)

Keep up the good work. Continue working on making connections between course content and your own life, your experiences, goals, and personal journeys. Personalizing the post content in this way contributes to the authenticity and meaningfulness of your posts. :)

That's it for now. Looking forward to future posts. :)

    Dave
