For this blog post I will be putting a technology use scenario about someone misusing or properly using a technological tool. At the end of the scenario is a question. I will be addressing the issue presented in that question and hope that you will also comment about what you thought of the scenario.
Here is the scenario 10:
"Kevin has just purchased the latest video game. Too fast '22. He and his friends enjoy playing games on their gaming systems. His best friend Vince also likes to play video games, but doesn't have the money to buy the latest games. Kevin decides to be a good friend and install a copy of his game on Vince's system. Does sharing games, music, or movies hurt anyone?"
What do I think?
The only solution to their problem (Vince not having enough money to buy the game) would be to save up money and buy the video game from the store or online. That way Vince gets to enjoy the game with his friends in due time and the creator of the game receives the well-deserved profits.
What are your thoughts? Is copying games, videos or music hurting anyone?
Hope to hear from you!
Cheers.
Hi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI really like your use of outside sources for supporting your argument. I also agree that it is very wrong of Kevin to copy the video game, but I also believe that is a chance that he didn't know it was wrong as illegally downloading music and movies and other digital media is such a commonplace in society. Although I know that ignorance is not an excuse, I think there needs to be more emphasis put on the severity of these actions rather than thinking it is ok because "everyone else is doing it." Because this is all being done digitally Kevin does not see the people that he is hurting by copying the video game, and the digital component doesn't make it seem like he is stealing, but in actuality it is no different than taking a copy of the game from a store, which I am sure Kevin would never do. These are my ideas on your scenario. Great analysis!
Hi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI found it very interesting how you came up with your decision. In particular, your emphasis on ultimately doing the right thing and purchasing video games, videos, and music is what I enjoyed most about this particular post.

Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your approach to this situation. Not paying for video games, music and other things online IS illegal, however many people do it on a regular basis. Websites like PirateBay and KickAssTorrents allow us access to anything we want... for free! Websites like this sometimes make us forget that what we are doing is illegal, and you comment on how it takes away profit from the individual who created the music/game/movie.
Great post,
Karlee
Hello Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that at the end of the day, we should be paying for all of our video games, movies, music etc. I think it hurts the artists and is somewhat disrespectful for the creators of these things to get no recognition or money for all the hard work they put in to the product. At the same time, it is very easy to download things for free now a days. There are many sites that offer free movie or game downloads with out having to pay any money. I feel that since options like these sites are around, it is more convenient and easier on the pocket to just use them as oppose to having to buy all of the content. I do believe that the creators are getting "the short end of the stick" in this scenario, but i understand why people download for free as it is very easy to.
Hi Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with wha you are saying. I think that it is important that everyone pays for all of their games, music or anything!! Not paying is illegal and can cause for harsh punishments. Everyone always wants to take the cheapest way towards things and its easy to forget that what you're doing is illegal when EVERYONE does it.
Great post!
